If you joined us for last year's inaugural race, you know how exciting this event will be! CROWBAR will again start and finish at the Bunchgrass trailhead in Logan Canyon, but with a brand new course and more emphasis on the 'up'. The race will be open to participants of all abilities on randonee, telemark, or splitboard gear. The course will cover roughly 10-12 miles of fun, variable backcountry terrain, with 3-4000 feet of elevation gain spread over multiple climbs and descents. This will be a self-supported event, and racers must carry functioning avalanche rescue gear (beacon, probe, and shovel). Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers. The entry fee is $30, with snacks and refreshments provided at the finish line.

We will hold our orientation meeting on Jan. 5 at 6 pm at Common Ground. For those who may miss the meeting and are interested in the program, you may call Paul Rogers at 752-2544 for more information.

This is the fourth year of the "Generation XC" cross country ski school for kids. The classes emphasize FUN, skills, balance, winter appreciation, and teamwork through ski games. We welcome participants for all three programs: our FUNdamentals class (ages 8-13, Jan. 9 - Feb. 13, $45), First Tracks (ages 4-7, Jan. 16 - Feb. 13, $25) and Fast Tracks (ages 14-18, Jan. 9 - Feb. 13, $55). All classes take place Saturday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30 at the Beaver Bottoms groomed trails. The First Tracks students are required to have a parent at the class. If we have less than five students sign up for a program we will drop the class and refund the registration fees, so PLEASE encourage your children, their friends, and schools in your area to register kids for this really great program. Scholarships are available to subsidize registration fees upon request.

We want to thank those who came out and participated in the 2nd NU Fun Race of the year. We know how slow the conditions were and how the new snow affected the striding during this classic technique race! Great job for sticking (no pun intended) it out and finishing! We have decided to move the next race on Sunday, Feb. 7 to the Beaver Bottoms ski trails. See above race schedule for time, cost, etc.. Thanks again for your support for cross-country skiing here in Cache Valley!

Women's Day in the Backcountry

On January 23 join Sara Goeking and Becca Scully for an all women's backcountry adventure. Location will depend on avalanche conditions and interest. The plan is to go out for a nice tour and make some turns. This is informal way of getting out and enjoying what the Bear Rivers have to offer, meeting other women interested in Backcountry skiing and split boarding, and having fun. All abilities are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Utah Special Olympics - Logan

When: February 27, Time - TBD
Where: Beaver Bottoms

On February 27, the Northern Utah Regional Special Olympics winter events will return to the groomed trails at Beaver Bottoms. Events include cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with individual and relay categories. We need several volunteers to help set up the course, assist at start/finish lines, and provide general assistance to competitors and coaches. Volunteering with the Special Olympics is a great way to help more people experience the joys of skiing and snowshoeing.
