Cross Country Skiing
Nordic United grooms several trails for cross country skiing in coordination with the Cache Valley Fat Bike Collective who groom trails for snow biking.
In 2018 there were over 4300 winter visits to Green Canyon! If you enjoy the trails, please join or make a donation. We receive no funding from the Forest Service for grooming. Each time we groom it costs approximately $100 in fuel, maintenance, snowmobile expenses and volunteer time. The next time you see a groomer on the trail, thank them for all the hard work! You can contact the NU Grooming Coordinator if you want to volunteer or have grooming suggestions. There are also ungroomed trails in the valley and the mountains that you can tour on classic cross country skis (see section 3 below). 1. NU-Groomed Trails
NU primarily grooms three locations - Green Canyon and Smithfield Canyon in Cache Valley and Beaver Bottoms near the Beaver Mountain Ski Area. We may groom other areas on a trial basis depending on snow conditions and available resources.
Green Canyon
The Green Canyon trailhead is located east of North Logan and includes parking and a bathroom. The out and back trail rises about 1,000 feet over 4 miles.
NU grooms a classic and skate cross-country track on the gravel road 2-3 days per week from roughly December to March, as conditions allow. There is also a parallel single-track trail for snow biking and trail running that is groomed as well. When warm weather begins in March, the lower section may be icy, but the upper section can still offer great skiing. The heavily used trail is a mixed-use trail for skiers, walkers, snowshoers, and ski bikers. Give way to the descending skiers who may have less control than those ascending.

Beaver Bottoms
Beaver Bottoms is located 0.3 miles before/below Beaver Mountain Ski Resort. Parking is available but may be crowded on weekends with snowmobile trailers. Beaver Bottoms trail is across the road in the open field (see photo). The 4km loop has one hill, but is otherwise gently sloped.
NU grooms a classic and skate cross-country track 2-3 days per week from January to March, or as conditions allow (the rocky terrain requires a deep snow base). The high elevation allows late season skiing. The trail is generally only used by skiers and snowmobiles are not allowed in the ski area.

Beaver Bottoms is groomed by Nordic United under a right-of-entry permit from The State of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration Permit #6773.

Smithfield Canyon
Smithfield Canyon is located about 5 miles northeast of downtown Smithfield. The trail is about 2.3 miles each way and rises about 700 feet as you go up the canyon. Parking and a bathroom are available at the trailhead.
Temporary Grooming
NU may groom other areas as resources and conditions allow. Check the Trail Conditions or Facebook pages for updates!
2. Other Groomed Trails
Tony Grove Road, Franklin Basin Road, Beaver Creek & Swan FlatsThese roads are groomed primarily for snowmobiles by the State of Utah but can be used for cross country skiing as well. The best times are early in the morning after the groomer is finished but before the snowmobilers begin using the road. The Utah Snowmobile Association has grooming reports and scheduling updates on their website.

Cherry Peak Resort
Cherry Peak Resort in Richmond has a 0.6 mile groomed nordic trail loop. Free for season pass holders; $5/day otherwise. Regularly groomed but not a set schedule - call for latest groom. Corduroy only, no classic track currently. See resort map.
In The Valley |
In The Mountains |
These areas are gravel roads in the summer that are closed to vehicles in the winter and are flat enough for classic cross country skiing touring. Additional backcountry touring locations are available on the trailheads map.
* Snowmobiles also use these areas. Be aware and give right of way. |
